In 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use.

In 2015 over 200 scientists signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal, asking the United Nations to encourage the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop more protective EMF guidelines, promote precautionary measures, and educate the public about health risks, particularly risk to children and foetal development.
In May 2016 the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) released the results of a $25 million study early because its research showed statistically significant increases in rare types of cancer in the brains and hearts of rats that had been exposed to mobile phone radiation.
